Jays make a big comeback late but comes up inches short
The Jays went into the bottom of the eighth down 5-2 and they came up with two runs by Adam Lind against Joel Peralta who gave up three hits and a walk to his five batters to make it 5-4. Then Fernando Rodney came in to try to get a five out save and walked Yorvit Torrealba but then k'd both Kelly Johnson and Moses Sierra to end the eighth and in the ninth Omar Vizquel walked to open the inning and with two outs Colby Rasmus had a single to B.J. Upton and Omar tried to score the tying but could not get through Jose Molina as he was tackled and was tagged out to end the game and Rodney got his 40 save of the season. The thing about this play is why Anthony Gose was not sent down a few days earlier so that he could be up for this game instead of the fourth when his 10 days in triple A before being able to be brought up again as he was not being used at all leading up to his August 24 demotion.
The Jays had a brain fart in the bottom of the fifth with two outs Rajai Davis and Colby Rasmus walked and with Edwin Encarnacion at the plate they tried to both steal and they took the bat out of Edwin's hands as Colby Rasmus was caught at second in a 4-2 deficit when manager John Farrell did not want anyone running with Edwin at the plate.
The Rays came up with a 4 spot in the third against Henderson Alvarez who had only given up a walk going into the inning as Ryan Roberts had the first hit of the game for either team which was a homer. The homer raddled Alvarez as he gave up three hits and two walks to the next six batters with Ben Zobrist having a RBI double and Matt Joyce had a two-run double. Alvarez in the last two innings he pitched he gave up a single and a walk and the Jays only gave up four hits in the last 6 innings of the game but in the eighth Matt Joyce hit a solo homer off Brad Lincoln.
The Rays got a great performance from Jeff Niemann who pitched 3.1 innings of one hit ball and faced only ten batters and then had to leave the game with arm soreness after he had not pitched since May 14 against the Jays when Adam Lind broke his leg with a line drive. J.P. Howell got rocked by Edwin Encarnacion after walking Colby and Edwin hit a ball 488 feet to cup the lead to 4-2 in the fourth. Wade Davis was the best Rays pitcher ans picked up the win as he went 2.1 innings and did not give up a hit but did get two walks.
Matt Joyce and B.J. Upton both had two hits for the Rays of their 9 hits while the Rays had 7 batters getting hits
