Carlos Villanueva Tropicana nightmare continues
Carlos Villanueva is 1-3 with 10.32 ERA in 9 career outings Vs the Rays includong a 3 run on 6 hits with 3 walks over 6 innings at Tropicana field last month and tonight he only lasted 2.1 and gave up 7 runs on 8 hits and walked two more Rays. Villanueva got two quick outs to start the game but then faced one of his nemesis Ben Zobrist who had 4 hits in like 7 at bats and had given up 3 long balls and he put the Rays on the board with another shot this one a solo job. In the second inning he allowed Carlos Pena to come to the plate and he hit a gapper that Colby Rasmus got to it and throw it in to Adeiny Hechavarria who had trouble throwing to third and it was bounced to Brett Lawrie and when the play was over teo were in and Pena was standing on third. The next pitch that Villanueva throw was a fastball to Jose Molina who sent the ball even faster to the seats in left field to make it a very quick four run inning and a 5-0 lead. In the third inning Villanueva had the first four batters to reach base ending with a Luke Scott two-run double and then after getting Pena for the first out of the inning and the last batter he faced Chad Beck came in and left the two runners Villanueva left in place and the Rays lead 7-0 after three.
The Jays were unable to figure out Rays starter James Shields as he went 7 scoreless innings and gave 6 hits and a walk while baffling Jays batters to the tune of 9ks. In the end with the Jays down 8-0 in the top of the fifth they had their one and only opportunity to get back in the game as Colby Rasmus with two on and two outs and Edwin Encarnacion on deck ground out to end the inning.
In the end the Jays got smashed 12-1 picking up their only run in the eighth as the Jays unloaded their bench including Yunel Escobar coming off the bench and singled for Edwin Encarnacion and Rasmus who singled earlier scored on a RBI single by Yan Gomez who replaced Adam Lind. This all happened after David Carpenter came in for the sixth and helped the Rays put up their second four spot of the game on 4 hits and a walk.
The Rays bottom of the order went 6 for 13 and drove in 9 of their 12 runs as Luke Scott had 2 hits and 4 RBIs, Carlos Pena had 2 hits and 2 RBIs, and Jose Molina had 2 hits and 3 RBIs.
Rasmus was the only Jays with two hits but they were useless as he had his cance and blow it
