Tom Cheek finally heading to Cooperstown
Ford C frick Award is an award that fans got to vote for the final nominees for the announcer that will enter Cooperstown where the Baseball Hall of Fame stands and this year award winner is Toronto Blue Jays radio announcer Tom Cheek. It was eighth years of frustration as the Jays fans destroyed the voting process because behind the help of Mike Wilner who is the pre and post game guy for the Jays and he would continually remind fans to vote once a day everyday for Tom Cheek and he got at least half the votes for four or five years. This got very frustrating especially when Baseball hall changed the voting so fans could not see how many votes candidates were getting and one of the other 9 final candidates would be voted in instead of Tom year after year and it got me down to the point that I did not really vote this year as I did not believe it would happening.
Tom Cheek called the first ever Jays game on April 7, 1977 and then ever game that the Jays played til June 3, 2004 where he had to leave the team for the first ever time as a Jays broadcaster to attend his father funeral and a week later he went down for the count because of brain tumor. He called the first 4306 Jays in franchise history and that is not including the only 41 post season games the Jays have ever played going into the 2012 baseball season. He called a lot of great moments like George Bell catch in '85 sending the Jays to the playoffs for the first ever time and then Joe Carter catch in '92 and Otis Nixon bunt in Atlanta to bring the World Series over the boarder for the first ever time and then Joe's homer in '93 to keep the World Series on this side of the boarder and it was so good that it replaced the TV broadcasters on the replay of game 6 of the '93 World Series.
Listening to his voice calling plays it was awesome and brings back the voice of summer and it will be the third year in a roll that a Jay has been put into the hall of fame with Roberto Alomar and Pat Gillick in '11. then in 2012 Toronto Newspaper writer Bob Elliot that cover baseball for years starting with the Expos in 1978 until he moved to Toronto in 1987 to cover his first season with the Jays for the hardest end to the season for the Jays which was losing a week of games and missing the playoffs in 1987 to the Tigers on the last game of the season.
It will be amazing to see Tom Cheek go into the Hall of Fame and Jerry Howarth who was his side kick for many season and will indicate Tom into the Hall and hopefully Wilner gets to be there but will probably be doing the Jays game that weekend.
